Pottery: Unidentified Orvieto pottery (Perhaps)
Late Medieval maiolica bowl, painted in manganese and green with a plant in the centre, and on the sides lanceolate leaves and squiggles.
Earthenware. Tin-glazed off-white inside; lead-glazed pale yellowish-brown on the exterior; base unglazed. Painted in dark manganese and copper-green.
Shape 38. Circular with warped rim, sloping sides and flat base; the rim is pierced by two incorrectly placed suspension holes.
In the middle, within two manganese concentric circles, there is a plant with three oak (?) leaves and tendrils; on the sides, alternating lanceolate leaves and manganese squiggles with two manganese bands above.
History note: Probably William Ridout; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.

The form of the leaves, similar to those on famiglia verde wares, probably indicates a date in the late fourteenth, or early fifteenth, century. A comparable plant but with differently-shaped leaves occurs on a two-handled bowl excavated at Orvieto and now in the Museo Nationale delle Ceramiche, Faenza
