Description

Late Medieval maiolica bowl, painted in black and green with, on the inside, a rhomboidal area of cross-hatching.

Earthenware, tin-glazed beige on both sides; base unglazed. Painted in black and copper-green.
Shape 32. Circular with narrow sloping rim and deep curved sides, standing on a narrow foot.
Inside, there is a rhomboidal area of cross-hatching surrounded by a green line, and, further out, three short black lines and three longer green lines.

Note

Comparable motifs occur on two-handled bowls in the Fondazione Horne, Florence and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Orvieto, and, more boldly drawn with cross-hatched centres, on several fragments recovered from a 'butto' under the Palazzo del Popolo, Orvieto, which from architectural evidence were deposited not earlier than the 1280s.
