Description

Late Medieval maiolica bowl, painted in manganese and green with, in the middle, an interlocking loop knot.

Bowl. Cream earthenware. The interior and upper part of the exterior are tin-glazed pale beige; the lower part has opaque yellowish-brown glaze of which there are traces on the foot. Painted in manganese and copper-green.
Shape 24 with very narrow rim. Circular, carinated sides and narrow foot.
In the middle, within two manganese circles, there is an interlocking loop knot enclosing four green dots, surrounded by cross-hatching; on the rim, alternating groups of manganese and green radiating strokes; and on the exterior, manganese crosses between narrow horizontal bands with a green and a manganese band below.

History note: Purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1933 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
