Two-handled jar, tin-glazed earthenware painted in manganese and green with, on each side, a bishop and pine-cones on stems, surrounded by cross-hatching.
Buff earthenware. Lead-glazed brownish-yellow inside, and tin-glazed off-white on the exterior; base unglazed. The glaze has crazed. Painted in manganese and bluish-green.
Bulbous ovoid body: flat base projecting slightly at the edge: short cylindrical neck with everted rim, the top edge of which slopes outwards; two strap handles, each composed of three strips of clay pressed together.
On each side is a three-quarter-length figure of a bishop at the top of a stem, flanked by two stems bearing pine-cones. Between the stems are stylised leaves reserved in manganese cross-hatching. The handles are flanked by three vertical manganese lines. Below are two manganese bands, and, round the neck, a green plait between pairs of manganese bands. The handles and body below them are striped with alternate groups of manganese and green horizontal lines.
History note: Alfred Spero, London, from whom purchased in 1920 by F. Leverton Harris.
