Description

Late Medieval maiolica bowl, painted in manganese and blue with, in the middle, a woman's head in profile to the left.

Earthenware. Tin-glazed pinkish-grey overall except for the base. Painted in manganese and blue.
Shape 25. Circular with carinated sides and narrow base.
In the middle, a woman's head faces in profile to left towards four buds on stalks, surrounded by a blue circle edged with manganese. The sides are decorated with a row of slanting Ss with a manganese band above; the rim with alternating groups of blue splodges and manganese radiating strokes. Outside there are two manganese bands.

History note: Purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1933 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
