Description

Maiolica cup, painted in blue with lozenge-shape diaper patterns.

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed off-white on the interior and exterior. Painted in blue.
Truncated conical body with projecting base, concave underneath. On one side there is a loop handle with a longtitudinal depression on the exterior, and on the other side, the stumps of a handle.
The two sides are decorated with different lozenge-shaped diaper patterns in a rectangular panel. A rectangular grid pattern extends over the area from which the handle has been broken off.

Note

On acquisition this cup was recorded as being from Arezzo, but whether it was found there, or merely acquired there by F. Leverton Harris, is uncertain. Potters were recored in Arezzo in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, so it could have been made there.
