Description

Renaissance, maiolica jug, painted in gold lustre with a scale pattern, trellis diaper, diagonal strokes and horizontal bands.

Pale yellowish buff earthenware, tin-glazed creamy-white on the interior and exterior; base unglazed. Painted in gold lustre, appearing red in some areas.
Pear-shaped, standing on a low foot, the short neck expanding slightly towards the rim which is pinched at the front to form a lip; roll handle with thumbprints at its upper and lower ends.
On the front, there is a wide panel of scale pattern flanked by narrower panels of trellis diaper; below, a wide zone of lustre and a row of diagonal strokes between narrow horizontal bands, and on the neck, elongated oval motifs between narrow horizontal bands. The rim, edge of the foot, and outside of the handle are lustred. Inside the neck is an `A'. Below the handle is the mark SP in monogram with a stroke through the tail of the P.
