Description

Renaissance, maiolica part of a jug, painted in polychrome with lines, a trellis of petals, asterisks and yellow dots.

Pale buff earthenware, tin-glazed on the exterior; interior not visible; base unglazed. Painted in dark blue, green, yellow, and manganese-purple. Bulbous body, lacking the front and lip; strap handle with a shallow longitudinal depression.
Pairs of blue lines flanking a wider yellow line run round the base, the neck, vertically down each side of the handle, and across the junction of its lower end with the body. The area under the handle is undecorated. The rest is covered by a trellis of petals outlined in manganese-purple over which are imposed short wavy blue lines and asterisks, and yellow dots. On the right side is part of the yellow petal border of the front panel. The exterior of the handle is green. A shaded blue area below the handle is marked twice in darker blue with an open P crossed.

Note

The pattern on the side of this jug was derived from Valencian lustreware decorated with small petalled flowers and parsley-like leaves on coiling or wavy stems, which was imported into Tuscany in substantial quantities during the fifteenth century. A dish with this type of decoration in the Fitzwilliam is C.4-1961. Galeazzo Cora named the pattern 'Santa Fina' decoration after the Hospital of Santa Fina at San Gimignano which had the remains of a set of pharmacy jars decorated in this way until they were transferred to the Museo Civico in 1906.
