Description

Clay column capital with traces of slip

Clay column capital with traces of a red and white wash. The clay is nile silt and the capital has been made by a combination of moulding and also throwing on a wheel. The style is a form of 'Corinthian' with spirals perhaps imitating foliage rather than the spirals that are associated with the so-called Ionic form dating to the Greek and Roman periods. The object is said to have come from a church near Argin, North of the Wadi Halfa in Nubia and can be associated with a similar piece (E.173.1912) and also a shaft (E.171.1912).
