Faience New Year flask
New Year flask, inscribed. Such flasks were made to celebrate the coming of the new year and the annual flooding of the Nile. The latest examples date to the Persian period. The name of the king is often inscribed on these vessels, in recognition of his role. During the inundation the king was not permitted to sail on the Nile; this was deemed to be unlucky.
