Description

Isis knot, wooden, with painted decoration. It appears that a layer of white pigment was applied before the individual components were painted. Original paint remains, the blue pigment in particular is prominent on the front. However, there is considerable loss of paint to much of the surface of the wood, most noticeable along the top and bottom, on the sides of the knot, and at the base of the loop. At this point also, there is a visible crack that runs through both sides of the object. A darker patch on the back of the object surrounding the crack suggests that this had come away and was later reattached. Woodworm is visible on the front of the object, and is further apparent on the back. The back of the object shows traces of a blue material, of a similar shade to the pigment decorating the surface, but around par5fs of this material, a thick brown substance can be distinguished. A circular stain (possibly a watermark?) is also present.
