Description

Isis knot, wooden, with painted decoration. It appears that a layer of white pigment was applied before the individual components were painted. This particular example is most closely paralleled with E.GA.2902.1943 A, as both feature a large vertical groove that runs down the centre on the front, that is not visible on either B or C. There is considerable loss of paint to much of the surface of the wood (more so than the other examples), most noticeable along the front, top and bottom, on the sides of the knot, and at the base of the loop. Cracks in the wood are visible on the sides of the knot, and along the base. Part of the reverse of the left side of the knot has been lost. Moreover, it appears that the bottom left corner of the base has come away and was reattached later. On the back, yellow pigment can again be seen alongside traces of woodworm, however, a pale 'wispy' material (possibly fabric?) is apparent on the left side, and an attached material at the loop bears a overlapping pattern as seen in the warp and weft of fabric. Traces of what appears to be mud are also present.
