A Italian street scene with figures
Draughtsman: Unknown
History note: From the collection of Charles Ricketts, R.A. (1866-1931) and Charles Shannon R.A. (1863-1937); on loan to the Museum from January 1933 - 1937
The Ricketts and Shannon Collection. Bequeathed by Charles Shannon, 1937
Method of acquisition: Bequeathed (1937) by Shannon, Charles Haslewood
This drawing was bequeathed as by Fragonard (1732-1806), but has since been rejected as inconsistent with his style. Among alternative attributions which have been proposed are Joseph-Benoitée (1743-1807), and Jacques-François Amand (1730-69), although in neither case does the boldness of this drawing accord completely with their work.
