Fritware, coated in a white glaze and painted with lustre
Fritware, probably wheel thrown, coated in a white glaze and painted in lustre
Shape: conical dish with wide, everted rim and a low foot ring
Interior: on the rim a band of pseudo-calligraphy is enclosed within two concentric bands. On the body, emanating from a central cross with triangular arms containing lustre scrolls and peacock eyes, a spiralling vegetal design incorporating split palmettes of two kinds: small examples painted in lustre and larger examples filled with further lustre scrolls.
Exterior: a lustre band, enclosing the decoration on the interior, continues onto the exterior of the dish. White glaze covers the surface, with occasional splashes of lustre, terminating on the lower body or foot ring.
Accepted by HM Government under the Cultural Gifts Scheme from the Ades Family and allocated to the Fitzwilliam, 2019
