Description

Fritware coated in a white glaze painted in blue, turquoise and lustre

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in white glaze painted under the glaze with blue and turquoise and over the glaze with lustre.
Shape: biconical bowl with plain rim, sits on a foot ring
Interior: on the upper body a lustre band, enclosed by lines of blue, is inscribed with naskh script. On the body, a frieze of lustre inscriptions alternate with rosettes painted in blue and lustre. In the roundel, the surface is divided into panels by a central blue rosette and radiating half arabesques. The panels contain palmettes and half palmettes reserved on a lustred ground incised with scrolls.
Exterior: the rim is painted with a band above a naskh inscription, both in lustre. On the body, a kufic inscription is reserved in lustre and enclosed by blue bands; a further lustre band is painted above the foot ring. Glaze terminates unevenly on the foot ring; a thin clear glaze is present on the underside of the foot ring.
