Description

Fritware, coated in a white glaze painted in polychrome

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in white with red, blue, turquoise, grey, black and flesh tones.
Shape: bi-conical bowl with a plain rim, sits on a foot ring
Interior: the rim is painted with a dentailated pattern in grey. On the neck a floriated kufic inscription is reserved in red, turquoise and blue and separated by roundels containing a blue arabesque reserved on a red ground. The roundel on the base is enclosed by a further frieze of small medallions, containing palmettes reserved in green or grey, separated by red lozenges. On the base, contained within a scalloped roundel, a horseman wearing a red tunic is mounted on a blue stead and surrounded by scrolling palmettes, all reserved on a turquoise ground.
Exterior: the rim is painted with a turquoise concentric line. On the body, a grey lozenge pattern, dotted with red and turquoise, encloses a kufic inscription floriated with red and separated by turquoise medallions containing red stylised birds. Glaze terminates unevenly on the foot ring.
