Description

Pale buff earthenware, covered with translucent green glaze, very unevenly applied on the back, and stencilled in black. Circular with very shallow curved sides, standing on a footring which is unglazed. Decorated with a stylized cockerel facing towards the left with a plant on each side of it.

Note

In 1950 Lurçat was asked by Firmin Bauby if he would work for his St Vincens pottery at Perpignan. From then until 1966 Lurçat visited the pottery and created ceramics under the guidance of the head of the workshop, Gumersind Gomila. Faience jugs, dishes, vases, and tiles were made by the potters and decorated by Lurçat, The master copy was then reproduced in limited editions of about 25 to 100. Typically Lurçat’s designs have very bright colouring, and motifs such as cocks, leaves, stars and human profiles
