Pottery: Indio Pottery
Creamware painted underglaze in blue on the sides with floral sprays and on the front with the inscription Wm Kingwell/1782 within a cricular wreath
Creamware, thrown, with applied lip and handle, painted in blue under clear lead-glaze. The pear-shaped jug has a projecting lip moulded with a female mask, and a wavy loop handle. On the front, within a circular wreath of husks is the inscription, 'Wm Kingwell./1782.' The sides are decorated with sprays of flowers, and the mask is picked out in blue.

On accession the jug was attributed to Leeds, but has since been reattributed to Bovey Tracey in Devon. The mask under the lip matches sherds found at the site of the Indio Pottery.. It was probably made for a William Kingwell who married Jemima Coysh on 17 June 1782 at Ilsington, near BoveyTracey.
