Description

Fritware coated in blue or white glaze painted in lustre

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in a blue or white glaze painted with lustre
Shape: hemispherical bowl with everted, slightly collared rim, sits on a foot ring.
Interior: rim is painted with a lustre band; blue pigment runs over from the exterior. Radiating panel design painted in lustre comprising blue Maltese cross containing jewel like motifs and scrolls. Between the arms of this cross panels are filled with birds in reserve, or friezes of scrolling half palmettes and dots or scrolls. Glaze covers the surface unevenly, pooling in the base and leaving areas uncovered.
Exterior: lustre continues on the rim. On the upper body an inscription is painted in lustre but this is worn off in large sections. Glaze runs over the lower body unevenly, pooling in droplets around the foot ring.
