Description

White salt-glaze stoneware decorated in relief with lion's masks, putti, and vine branches painted in green, dark pink, and black enamels

White stoneware, slip-cast with integral relief decoration painted in bright green, dark pink and black enamels. The sauceboat has a projecting lip and wavy rim. It stands on three shell and paw (?) feet, and has strap handle which curves outwards at the top, slopes inwards below a thumb rest, and has a slight kick at its base. The body is decorated with three lion's masks coloured dark pink, surrounded by fruiting vine branches. On each side, near to the rim, is a seated putto holding vine branches in his hands. The feet are coloured green and there is a green band with leaves at intervals running round the interior of the lip. There are also a few small spatterings of green on the base of the interior.
