Reform Jug
White earthenware transfer-printed in dark pink. The jug has a bulbous body, wide straight-sided neck, curved lip and angular loop handle. On the front, a lion crouches in front of two short columns with the words ‘LORDS/MAJORITY/81 COMMONS/MAJORITY/16’ above a crown and the words ‘THE PURITY OF THE CONSITUTION RESTORED 1832’. On one side are circular medallions enclosing portraits and the legends, ‘EARL GREY, LORD ALTHORP, LORD JOHN RUSSELL, LORD BROUGHAM’ with above and below, the words ‘THE ZEALOUS & SUCCESSFUL/PROMOTERS OF REFORM’. On the reverse is a wreath of national floral emblems enclosing the words ‘ROYAL ASSENT/TO THE/REFORM/ BILL 7 JUNE 1832’. On each side of the neck, clasped hands and a floral motif.
