Description

Earthenware, with incised and slip-trailed decoration, and lead-glaze. Slip-trailed inscription G R WROTHAM W A K

Hard dark red earthenware, appearing dark brown, thrown, incised, and decorated with slip-trailing in white which appears pale yellowish and olive-green under the lead-glaze. Bulbous pear-shaped body with cylindrical neck and loop handle. Around the widest part of the body is trailed G R WROTHAM WAK with groups of dots between the letters.

History note: Acquired by the vendor from a farmhouse at Rolvenden, near Tenterden; sold London, Christie's, 26 April 1917, lot 7; purchased for 100 guineas (£105) by Mr Stoner on behalf of Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

Note

The form of this jug and its very dark brown colour are very different from the majority of slip-trailed Wrotham wares and suggest that the potter was influenced by German stoneware. The initials GR probably stand for the potter, George Richardson, who initialled pots between 1642 and 1677, and died in 1687.
