Description

Tin-glazed earthenware dish painted in blue with lambrequins

Buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed, and painted in blue. Circular with an everted rim moulded with small gadroons, projecting from a ridge, deep curved sides with a sloping slightly concave zone at the top, and an almost flat base. There are three spur marks on the underside of the rim. In the centre there is a six sided medallion formed by scrolls and stylized foliage reserved in a blue ground, and at the top of the sides, a border of lambrequins (broderies). The small gadroons on the rim each have a blue spot radiating from a line.

Note

This dish was accessioned as from Rouen, but might perhaps have come from Lille. This type of decoration is referred to in France as 'broderies' or 'au lambrequin'.
