This is one of about fifty known examples of brown salt-glazed stoneware mugs (also known as jugs) with a double-walled body with a carved pattern on the exterior wall. A similar 'Carved Jug' is illustrated on a trade card of James Morley in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
