Description

Brown salt-glazed stoneware with rouletted and incised decoration, and on one side, the incised name and date 'Joseph/Poyne/1723'.

Brown salt-glazed stoneware, moulded, rouletted and incised. The circular flask has flat sides and a short cylindrical neck at the top closed by a cork. One side is incised with the name and date 'Joseph/Poyne/1723', and has a border of rouletted radiating lines. The other side a plain centre, surrounded by two sets of three concentric circles with a space between them, another plain area, and a similar rouletted border.

Note

This flask bears a man's name and was probably used for a spirit, such as gin, or rum. There is a possibility that it was one of an exchange of gifts, because a flask closely resembling it is inscribed 'My Love is pure and shall Endure 'around 'JB/1723', which probably indicates a gift from a man to a woman.
