Description

Fritware coated in a turquoise glaze painted in polychrome and gilded

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in turquoise glaze painted in red, green, black, blue and white and gilded.
Shape: inverted pear shaped jug on a flaring foot ring and topped with a cylindrical neck. A strap handle is attached to the neck and upper body.
Exterior: on the rim a black dentillated pattern is painted above a naskhi inscription, reserved in black. On the neck, a frieze of seated figures wearing red blue or green hats and patterned robes with gold arm bands are surrounded by cintimani in red, white, green and blue. The figures in red robes hold a cup in an out-stretched hand. On the shoulder a kufic style inscription is painted in black above a white cable patterns, containing red or blue lozenges. On the body, a frieze of stylised red flower buds, surrounded by red and white dots, are separated by red and black linear, horizontal arabesques. The handle is painted with broad horizontal black lines flanked by thin red lines. Glaze pools slightly on the lower body, terminating unevenly on the foot ring.
Interior: turquoise glaze covers the surface, otherwise undecorated.
