Description

Fritware, coated in a white glaze painted in polychrome and gilded

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in white glaze painted in blue, turquoise, black, red, and flesh tones and gilded.
Shape: carinated bowl with a 'T' shaped rim, sits on a low, slightly flared foot ring.
Interior: on the rim a frieze of floriated kufic divided by zig zag lines and hatched medallions, all painted in red, blue, turquoise and black. On the neck, a further floriated inscription, identical to that on the rim, is painted above a frieze of confronted, seated figures divided by leafy fronds. On the base a further pair of figures, flanked by leafy fronds, sit either side of a tree with blue and red leaves, which sprouts from a grassy mound. All the figures wear patterned robes painted in blue red or turquoise with gilded arm bands.
Exterior: a further floriated kufic inscription, identical to those on the interior, is painted on the neck. On the body turquoise tear drop medallions outlined with red alternate with blue quatrefoils.
