Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue

Dark buff earthenware, thrown, with applied handle, tin-glazed and painted in blue. Bulbous body with cylindrical neck, standing on a foot which is slightly concave underneath. The broad strap handle has a longitudinal depression on the exterior, and a pinched lower terminal. The body is decorated with 'birds on rocks' pattern in late-Ming style. The shoulder is decorated with a trellis pattern between sets of narrow horizontal bands, and on the neck there is scrolling foliage with a set of horizontal bands above. Below the main field there is a band of trellis pattern between sets of horizontal bands, and there is a broad band round the edge of the foot. The back of the handle is blue. Below the lower terminal is the date '1633'
