Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue and labelled S.ATTRIPLICIS OL

Buff earthenware, thrown with applied handle and spout, tin-glazed, except for the underside of the foot, and painted in blue. The globular body has a short neck with an everted rim, and stands on a hollow trumpet-shaped foot. A cylindrical spout is attached to the shoulder and on the opposite side there is a strap handle with a longitudinal groove on the outside and an upward kick at the lower end. On the front below the spout is a label painted with the words S.ATTRIPLICIS. OL with peacocks and leafy branches above, and below a winged cherub's head with tassels and swgs of fruit and foliage. Inside the foot there is a letter 'S'.

Note

Made in London or Bristol. The jar contained Syropus Attriplicis oleum (Syrup of oil of orache). The cartouche shows a bust of Apollo, the god of healing.
