The form was based on a French lead-glazed earthenware dish attributed to Bernard Palissy (c. 1510-c. 1589/90) or his followers. French tin-glazed examples were made in Nevers, in the first half of the 17th century.
Tin-glazed and painted earthenware. Press-moulded in the form of a woman reclining in a bath, traditionally identified as Pomona, a nymph who loved gardening and the cultivation of fruit . A copy of a French lead-glazed dish probably modelled by Guillaume Dupré (c. 1574-1642) and made in Claude Berthélemy’s pottery at Avon near Fontainebleau about 1600-10.
