Dish: Charles II on horseback

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome with an equestrian figure of Charles II between two stylised trees; border of blue dashes over a yellow band
Dark buff earthenware, the front tin-glazed, and painted in blue, pale green, yellow, orange, and manganese-purple; the reverse covered with greenish lead-glaze. Circular with curved sides and everted rim, standing on a footring. The front is decorated with Charles II mounted on a rearing horse going to the right, with a tree on either side. He wears a crown and ermine-lined cloak and carries a sceptre. Above, are the letters C 2 (raised) and R for Carolus Rex. Round the edge there is a yellow band and blue dashes.

The image was adapted from an undated engraving of Charles I entering Edinburgh by Cornelis van Dalen, possibly made shortly after 1641, which later formed the frontispiece to J. Nalson's 'Journal of the Tryal of Charles I', 1684. Long curly hair or a wig has been added to make the figure resemble Charles II. The same image was used for William III, sometimes with the horse going in the opposite direction..
