Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, green, and manganese-purple with stylized tulip and leaves surrounded by blue circles

Reddish-buff earthenware, tin-glazed on the front and painted in blue, green, and manganese-purple. The back has a dark orange lead-glaze with darker radiating streaks over a pale slip. The dish is circular with shallow curved sides and an everted rim, and stands on a footring. The front is decorated with a central tulip and four leaves on each side growing from a small mound, surrounded by three blue concentric circles round the rim.

History note: E.M.Tuke collection probably by 1882: his widow; after her death, sold The Vineyard, Saffron Walden, 18 June, 1908, part of lot 326; Mr Haggar, dealer of Saffron Walden, who sold it to Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
