Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with Chinese figures in a landscape
Buff earthenware tin-glazed pale turquoise-green, and painted in blue. The pot has a bulbous body with a short straight neck a d stands on three small feet in the form of birds. On the front there is a sucking spout, and on either side a loop handle with a serpent on its back and spirals of clay on either side of the lower end. The domed cover has a flange round the edge, and two handles similar to those on the body flanking a ball-shaped knob surmouned by a small bird. The sides and cover are decorated with Chinese figures in oriental landscapes, and the knob with floral sprays. On the front, to viewer's left of the spout are the initials 'B/I.E' and on the right of it, the date '1687'
History note: Private collection near Winchester; Messrs. Sargent and Fisher, Palmer Street, Westminster from whom purchased for £12 on 2 March 1906 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge. Lent to the Fitzwilliam Museum on either 2 or 4 November 1909
