Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed greyish-white, and painted in blue and brownish-red. Circular with a wide sloping rim, shallow well, and recessed base. The well is decorated with a central medallion enclosing a shore scene with a tower beside the sea and two small sailing boats, surrounded by a border of diaper panels and formal flower sprays with rhomboidal leaves, alternating with stylized baskets of fruit. The rim is encircled by a brownish-red line.

History note: Bought at or near Cambridge by Mr Freeman, dealer of Cambridge, from whom purchased on 27 January 1904 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
