Description

Fritware, coated in a white glaze and painted in lustre

Fritware, probably wheel thrown, coated in white glaze painted in brown lustre
Shape: globular body, slightly carinated at the shoulder and lower body sitting on a foot ring base. Inverted pear shaped neck with flaring rim.
Exterior: the rim (reconstructed) is painted with an imitation lustre band. The remaining surface is divided into decorative friezes, separated by lustre bands and all painted in lustre unless otherwise stated. On the neck, an initial frieze of pseudo-calligraphy is divided by panels of dots and dashes, followed by two friezes of tear-drop cartouche containing cypress trees and finally a chequer-board pattern containing dotted lines and scrolls. On the shoulder, a band of running quadrupeds is reserved in lustre above a nashki inscription. On the body, floriated kufic script (or pseudo-script) are reserved in lustre, framing a frieze of mounted riders separated by chequer board trees. On the lower body, an arabesque pattern is divided by stylised trees. Glaze terminates unevenly on the lower body or foot ring.
Interior: visible surface is glazed.
