Pottery: Unidentified Lambeth Pottery (Probably)
Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with men and animals in a landscape with buildings
Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed, and painted in blue and a little reddish-brown, and having an inserted glass base - probably original. The cylindrical body of the mug slopes outwards towards the base, and has an applied loop handle with is of oval section with a long pinched terminal. The exterior is decorated with a continuous landscape including with from left to right: a tree, a house with an ornamental fence in front of it, a seated man talking to two standing men, a dog, a smaller house and tree, and in the middle distance above, a small flock of six sheep and groups of flying birds. Below the scene there are two narrow horizontal bands.The upper and lower edges are banded in reddish-brown. The outside of the handle is decorated with foliated scroll-like motifs.
History note: Stewart Acton, dealer in Brighton, by whom sent on approval to Cambridge where it arrived on 24 June 1924 and was bought on 29 June for £10 by DrJ.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
