Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with a shepherd and shepherdess in a landscape
Buff earthenware, tin-glazed bluish-white, and painted in blue. Circular wth a sloping rim, sloping sides, and flat centre with recessed base. The front is decorated overall with a Shepherdess and a shepherd holding a houlette in a landscape with a ruined arch and a tree on the left.
History note: One of a set of six in Plashwood's Sale; bought by Mr Johnson, 4 Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds who sold it about 1894 to Dr J.W.L. Glaisher FRS. Trinity College, Cambridge

The shepherd a d shepherdess are after the title page of F. de Cuvilliés, Morceaux de Caprice, à Divers Usages, c. 1770. The tower on the left does not appear in this print. The shepherd is holding a houlette, a staff with a cup-shaped end which was used for throwing stones at dogs or wolves which threatened the flock.
