Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue and bianco-sopra-bianco

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed bluish-white and painted in blue and bianco-sopra-bianco. Circular with a wide slightly sloping rim, and shallow well, with recessed base. The middle is decorated with three Chinese figures: a man (?) holding a parasol. standing beside a fence and plants, a boy seated on a fence, and a woman standing behind a table on which there is a bowl. The group is enclosed by a circular border of two different patterns of zig-zags and wavy lines. The rim is decorated in bianco-sopra-bianco with stylized flowers, leaves, and pinecones, and round the edge there is a narrow geometric border. On the underside there are the script initials 'JEL' (?) over the underlined date '1765'.

Dating

18th Century, third quarter#
George III
Production date: dated AD 1765

Note

Despite the label on the back. and the plate having been bought at Wincanton, there is no excavated evidence to indicate that it was made there, and the date, 1765, is after the pottery closed, probably around 1750. The bianco-sopra-bianco design indicates that it is most likely to have been made in Bristol. This was Dr J.W.L. Glaisher's view when he acquired it.
