Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, a little red with a fox-hunting scene andbianco-sopra-bianco boder inside and an Oriental coastal landscape outside

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed bluish-white and painted in blue, bianco-sopra-bianco, and a little red and yellow. Circular with deep curved sides, standing on a footring. The inside is decorated wth a hunting scene with two riders, two hounds and a red fox within a circular rococo C-curve and shell border entwined with a ribbon inscribed ‘Prosperity to Fox Hunting 1758’. Around the sides is a wreath of lily-like flowers and foliage in bianco-sopra-bianco. The exterior has an Oriental coastal landscape with junks, rocks, trees, Chinese figures, a bridge, and houses within a fenced compound, all in blue. The rim is yellow.

Note

Although bianco-sopra-bianco decoration was used extensively in Bristol, the high quality of the painting of this bowl suggests London as a more likely place for its manufacture.
