Description

Renaissance maiolica cup with one handle, painted in blue, green and yellow with, on the inside, a flower.

Earthenware, tin-glazed greyish-white on the interior and exterior; base unglazed. Painted in blue, green, and bright yellow. Shape 29 with one horizontal loop handle. Circular with curved sides and one loop handle, standing on a narrow base. Inside is a flower with a yellow centre, surrounded by two concentric blue circles, and twelve green petals with a yellow circle over them. Round the rim are two blue bands and a wider yellow band.

History note: Probably purchased from Kerin, London, on 9 December 1993 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
