Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, green, and yellow

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed and painted in blue, sage-green, yellow, and a little red, and sponged in blue. The reverse is lead-glazed over a pale slip. The dish is circular with deep curved sides and everted rim, and stands on a footring. The front is decorated with Adam and Eve standing on either side of the Tree of Knowledge around which the Serpent is entwined. On each side there are low sponged bushes and in the foreground, small blue plants on a green ground.

History note: William Austin and Co, 110, Oxford Street, London (a furniture shop), from whom purchased on 9 January, 1904 for £4.4.0. by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.
