Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, green, yellow, and manganese-purple with Adam and Eve on either side of the Tree of Knowledge; blue dash border

Buff earthenware, the front tin-glazed and painted in blue, green, yellow, and manganese-purple; the back lead-glazed brownish-yellow over pale slip. Circular with deep curved sides and narrow, slightly everted rim, standing on a wide footring. The front is painted with Adam and Eve standing on either side of the Tree of Knowledge in which the devil in the from of a snake is entwined. The fruits and foliage of the tree are treated as if they formed petalled flowerheads. On each side of the figures there is a blue stylized bush formed by vertical strokes. The edge is encircled by two faint blue bands and slanting blue dashes.
