Description

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed and painted in dark blue and turquoise green. The pot is supported on three bird-shaped feet, and has a bulbous body with a short bulge at the top, and a short sloping neck pierced by square, lozenge-shaped, and smaller circular holes. A curved spout with applied scrollwork and bosses is attached to the middle of one side. The two handles are of round section with applied bosses next to rounded terminals, and have a snake attached to the outside. The decoration is in dark blue, except for the snakes on the handles which are turquoise-green. The front is decorated with two floral arrangements on either side of the spout, and above the one on the left, the initials and date , 'AW/1697'. The back is decorated in the middle with a peacock standing on a rock, to the left of it a bird perching on a bamboo, and to the right, other flowers and foliage. There is a band of scrollwork on the bulge, and a double row of scallops round the rim. The sides of the handles and spout are decorated with blue scrollwork. The three birds have spouts down their necks and breasts.
