Description

Buff earthenware tin-glazed greenish-white and painted in blue, dull green, dull yellow, brownish-red, and brown. Circular with six double scallops round the rim, and deep curved sides, standing on a footring, pierced by two holes before firing. Inside two concentric blue circles enclose a Oriental garden with a tree, flowering shrub, bamboo and banded rush fencing. On the exterior there are two similar gardens, and a narrow blue line following the curves of the rim.

Note

The decoration of this monteith (a bowl for rinsing and cooling wine glasses) was probably inspired by Japanese Kakiemon porcelains which had been imported since the 1680s. Kakiemon designs are uncommon on English delftware but were frequently imitated on soft-paste porcelain in England and on the Continent.
