Description

Tin-glazed earthenware decorated with applied floral sprays, and painted in blue, greyish-green, yellow, dull red, and manganese-purple with flowers, and a moth, and with a blue inscription 'WATERFIELD/1775'

Buff earthenware, with applied floral sprays, unevenly tin-glazed greyish-white, and painted in blue, greyish-green, yellow, dull red, and manganese-purple. The vase stands on a hollow rectangular socle, and is made up of five conjoined bases with spouts at the top for the stalks of the flowers. The upper part is painted with flowers, insects and butterflies, and the applied sprays are coloured naturalistically. The base has flowers on the ends, a butterfly on one longs side, and on the other an oval medallion enclosing WATERFIELD/1775 in blue. Its upper and lower borders are painted in manganese with 'cracked ice' decoration.
