Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, green, yellow,and manganese-purple

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed pale greenish-grey and painted in blue, green, yellow, and manganese-purple. Circular with a narrow sloping rim, shallow sloping sides and flat centre. The middle is decorated with a hot-air balloon in the sky over a house, trees, and a fence. The rim has a border of green festoons with manganese pendants between them, blue floral sprays, and a blue feathered edge.

Note

Probably made at Lambeth, at either the Lambeth High Street or Glasshouse Street potteries. The scene was probably inspired by Vincenzo Lunardi's flight from Moorfields in London in 1784 or several which he made from St George's Fields, Southwark in 1785.
