Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue and with a red line on the rim
Buff earthenware with greyish, very shiny tin-glaze, painted in blue, and with a red-brown line on the rim. Bulbous body with a flaring neck and four loop handles, standing on a footring. Decorated on the sides between the handles with groups of flowering plants, rocks, and birds in imitation of Chinese porcelain. On one side is the inscription 'Joseph Horsford/1744, divided by a flowering tree and a bird. There is a broad blue band round the foot. Inside the mouth there is a squirrel (or rat?) and vine border. The foot is encircled by a broad blue band between two narrow, and the backs of the handles are decorated with a continuous scroll pattern.

This pot was attributed to Wincanton because it was said to have been owned by Joseph Horsford who lived at Marnhull, Dorset, nine miles from Wincanton. But there is insufficient evidence to attribute to Wincanton, and it may have been made in Bristol or possibly at Lambeth.
