Description

Salt-glazed stoneware painted in polychrome with a wreath and sprays of roses, other flowers, and foliage.

Salt-glazed stoneware, thrown and turned, painted in blue, green, yellow, red, pink, greyish-purple and black enamel colours. Pear-shaped body with turned foot, projecting sparrow-beak spout, and strap handle with a slight kick up at the lower end. On the front in greyish-purple, 'M.S./1766', surrounded by a wreath composed of four roses, other flowers and foliage; on the sides, detached sprays and leaves.

The style of flower painting resembles that on a punchbowl initialled and dated IC 1767 which is attributed to John Platt and Samuel Walker of Rotherham, operating c. 1766-70. see Documentation Edwards and Hampson.
