Description

Renaissance maiolica plate, painted in polychrome with a bust of a bearded man in the central medallion.

Plate. Earthenware, tin-glazed lavender-blue overall; the reverse uneven and with numerous pin holes. Painted in blue, yellow, orange, green, and white.
Shape approximately 52, convex in the middle. Exceptionally heavy for its size. Circular with wide flat rim, shallow well, slightly convex in the centre, and concave base.
The central medallion contains a bust of a bearded man in profile to left, reserved in a bright yellow ground. On the sides, three blue knot motifs alternate with blue hearts between white foliated scrolls. The rim is decorated with a garland of leaves and berries, white scallops, and a blue band next to the edge. The back is painted in blue with a central cross, surrounded by three radiating squiggles alternating with three double-crossed circular motifs.
