Description

Incised earthenware with cream slip under an amber glaze

Red-brown earthenware, wheel thrown, bowl with cream slip, incised painted decoration under an amber glaze.
Shape: Carinated bowl with bead rim, straight neck and a sharp carination descending onto a low foot ring.
Interior: A cream slip coats the interior with an incised scrolling pattern on the neck enclosed by concentric lines. On the body, a thickly incised radiating geometric design comprising squares enclosing opposing diagonal lines and pairs of vertical lines containing a criss-cross diagonal pattern. Incisions on the body are painted dark brown and radiate from two concentric lines in the base. An amber glaze covers the decoration and pools slightly in one area of the interior carination.
Exterior: A cream slip coats the exterior to a mid-point in the body with irregular patches over the remaining surface. The neck is decorated with an incised pattern of repeating circles enclosed above and below by concentric lines. As on the interior, incisions appear to be emphasised with brown paint. An amber glaze covers the decoration to the carination and in places runs over the lower vessel body
